Monte Rosa Hut by Bearth & Deplazes Architekten

amazing design and the locale is nothing short of spectacular! m.

Contemporary version of a medieval donjon: Five-story wood construction made from prefabricated frame elements. The isolated mountain location mandates the greatest possible self-sufficiency. The ambivalence between a sense of security and being exposed defines the building’s structure: below are the communal areas with surrounding ribbon glazing, above the closed sleeping quarters. The cascading spiral stairway opens panorama views when ascending, follows the course of the sun, captures the solar irradiation, and distributes the warmth of the sun throughout the entire house.

Block Notes #7: Riva 1920

great designs and a great article after the jump! m.

“Our approach in this set of surveys has been to consider objects as texts that draw us into stories, which are waiting to be interpreted whether consciously or otherwise. By producing a sort of literary criticism of these tales, we have sought to flag up the idea that design’s value extends well beyond the mere function of everyday objects. However, in doing so, it has been important to remember that these texts-objects are not sim ply everyday things that produce sen sations and symbolism; they are also technical products, commodities, consumer goods and status symbols. In this collection of snapshots that can help to reveal the state of the art in the relationship between Italian industry and design, there is no claim to swan around like water diviners drawing conclusions, or even more presumptuously steering manufacturing. Rather, we have set out to offer new stimuli that may kindle curiosity and enthusiasm, which are the preconditions for research, innovation and hence the future.”

Timber House by KÜHNLEIN Architektur

precise german minimalist design and detailing. m.

The Timber House from KÜHNLEIN Architektur is situated on a high plateau in Upper Palatinate, a part of Bavaria, Germany.

Two gabled structures are unified with wooden lamellas: one containing living spaces and the other a series of bedrooms.

The combination creates two yards: One becomes the space you pass by as you enter the house from the street, while the other is a terrace oriented towards the wide landscape.

The windows to the street side are screened with the lamellae of the timber facade, while the windows to the landscape side have a free view, the facade is untreated larch wood, so it will grey with time. So from afar, the house appears like identical side-by side homes, completely devoid of windows.
