Red Bull’s New York Offices by INABA

nice under-stated design for red bull nyc. m.

best known for its high-energy drink, red bull wanted its new york headquarters to be low-key. the 16,800 sqft. project doesn’t celebrate the company’s values with eye-catching forms, nor is its layout influenced by recent theories of workplace productivity. instead, the INABA project is simple and without the pretense of being on the cutting edge of tech office design. it responds to the quick cycling of trends in interiors by steering clear of large-scale gestures, playful lounge zones, or urban ad hoc décor.

Video — Calbuco Volcano by Martin Heck: Timestorm Films

having seen two volcanos erupt several times I have to say this is just stunning — stellar video production too! m.

Volcano Calbuco erupted on April 22, 2015, for the first time in four decades. Located close to the cities of Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt in southern Chile. We spend the prior couple of days on the neighboring volcano Osorno (~20km linear distance) shooting timelapses. After an amazing night under the nightsky we took the cable car downwards after a delay caused by repairs. Already late we headed south to catch the ferry on Routa 7 down to Patagonia. After 10min on the ferry we noticed a massive, almost nuclear looking cloud boiling upwards just were we left a few hours ago. Frenetically looking for a good outlook we then rushed to the only non-forested place to get a decent view of the show. We quickly put every bit of camera-equipment we could find on the constantly growing mushroom-cloud. We shot timelapses in 8K and 4K with a Pentax 645Z and Canon 6D. On the A7s we shot 4K video to the Shogun. We filled almost all of our memory cards in the prior night so I had to do backups while shooting all this stuff.

This was for sure the most incredible show I’ve ever seen. I think this is a one in a lifetime event and I am so happy that we were able to capture it in all its glory.
We will also release a timelapse video of our 6 weeks trip to Patagonia soon.

Seeking Beauty: Highlights from Vienna Art Week

some fantastic + thought-provoking works in the mix — kudos! m.

Having just completed its twelfth edition, Vienna Art Week is an annual festival of events that seeks to promote and celebrate contemporary art made and shown in the Austrian capital. Known mainly for its rich musical tradition and imperial Austro-Hungarian architecture, Vienna may not be a regular stop for contemporary art-lovers travelling in Europe, nevertheless, the city has a vibrant art scene, with two Academies hosting around 5,000 art students, over 80 galleries, at least 100 museums and central Europe’s largest auction house, the Dorotheum. This year’s Art Week activated connections and synergies between many of Vienna’s cultural institutions, with a programme of over 200 events, which included discussions, exhibitions, gallery tours, studio visits and many more — all proving just how much there is going on under the radar in a city still mainly associated with Klimt and Otto Wagner.

Classic Bugatti Type 57: Racing Yacht for The 21st Century

hot! m.

the legendary bugatti ‘type 57’ was originally designed by jean bugatti, son of founder ettore, and was built from 1934 through 1940 with a total of 710 examples produced. industrial designer fraser leid, sketched the ‘atlantean’ racing yacht around the domed roof and windscreen of classic touring automobile. the bugatti concept also shares similar features such as the long wheelbase, and rear aerodynamic style. to keep itself balanced in the water, the design focuses on a low center of gravity, and hull that is raised above the water. the ‘atlantean’ translates the authentic frame well with its similar disproportions, and long front hull. the hommage from the south african designer could bring bugatti to come up with its own yachts to match its keen desire of speed on the track and to the water.

Denmark Art Museum Extension by James Turrell + Schmidt Hammer Lassen

top shelf team! look forward to seeing this completed. m.

it has been announced that american artist james turrell and schmidt hammer lassen architects are collaborating together to design the new extension to the ARoS aarhus art museum in denmark. the project, named ‘the next level’ will feature a 1,200 sqm subterranean gallery and two semi-subterranean art installations by turrell — ‘the sphere’ and ‘the dome’ — all of which would be integrated into the museum’s existing building fabric.

‘it is a privilege for me as an architect to have the opportunity to work with james turrell on this ambitious project. the next level project will develop the museum horizontally in contrast to the existing vertical movement and it is exciting to work with the great lines spanning from the river to the square of the aarhus music hall.’ explains morten schmidt, founding partner at schmidt hammer lassen.

the €30 million expansion will inherently merge art and architecture together to create new civic experience.
