La Mise en Abîme by Romain Crelier

terrific installation by the swiss artist. m.

Created by Swiss artist Romain Crelier, La Mise en Abîme (an idiom that communicates the same thing as “a curveball,” but means, roughly, “to have put into an abyss”) was a visually arresting artwork installed on the floor of the Bellelay Abbey in Switzerland back in 2013. The piece is comprised of two shallow pools of used motor oil that function as mirrors, reflecting the architectural details of the surrounding interior. The crude juxtaposition of recycled oil and the impeccably preserved aesthetic of a 12th century church wasn’t lost on the artist who referred to the piece as “monochrome paintings using a despised substance.”

top-shelf video installation! m.

“The Japanese artist’s latest installation is a commercially-driven piece, but makes something as familiar as a Honda Civic seem like one of the most otherworldly, beautiful things ever seen. An art report from Berlin by Crystal Bennes.”

99 Columns: An Interactive Scenographic Art Experience by Stéphane Malka

loving this minimalist light installation in paris. m.

or paris’ experiences art fair, stéphane malka architecture has infilled a vast exhibition space with ’99 columns’, an interactive scenographic art experience that visually and physically transforms the vacant site. attached to architectural beams installed throughout the industrial space are a sequence of vertically-oriented fluorescent tubes. these cylindrical light sources are connected to motion sensors that automatically generate fluctuating intensity within the hypostyle hall, completely bathing it in artificial light. the motion-activated system responds to visitors’ movements, blurring the line between the performance and the audience, and allowing the two to affect one other. the dynamic strings of light continually renew the viewer’s relationship to the venue, and architecture, as the space transforms, stretches and dematerializes.

Paper Cave Space by Kotaro Horiuchi

wonderful + etherial space in japan. m.

“the three-dimensional curved surface is made by soft white layers of paper hung side-by-side. holes on the façade let the comforting light shine through to illuminate the interior. located along a central axis, a backlit table made of artificial marble drawn by height variations form a freely undulating top that appears to float above the floor. the depth of the voids through its thickness allow the line of fixtures to transmit five different levels. the studio considers the furnishing to be a multi-functional device that can be used as an office, a saloon, a meeting place, a lounge or a bar.”

Video — 320° Licht: Spatial Experience @ Gasometer Oberhausen by Urbanscreen

stunning — brilliant — epic! m.

The ‘320° Licht’ installation of URBANSCREEN uses the cathedral-like beauty of the Gasometer Oberhausen as the starting point for a fascinating game with shapes and light.

Within a radius of 320 degrees graphic patterns grow and change on the 100-metre high inside wall of the Gasometer.

The observer experiences the interplay between real and virtual space, in which the Gasometer seems to dissolve into its own, filigree structures and yet finally always reverts to its clear shape. ’320° Licht’ is achieved with kind project support from Epson Germany.

With approx. 20,000 square meters of area played upon, the installation is among the world’s largest and technically most sophisticated interior projections — interconnecting 21 powerful projectors to one projection screen.
Duration (loop): approx. 22 min.

‘320° Licht’ is part of the exhibition ‘The Appearance of Beauty’ — the variety of beauty in art that is shown inside the Gasometer. The Gasometer Oberhausen opens this exhibition from 11th April until 30th December.
