Project X Featherweight Future Tech by Jones Snowboards

innovation + simplicity + technology = killer board design. i want one asap! m.

The Project X is a razor sharp, ultralight board made with our most advanced materials and construction technologies. Jones’ Board Engineer Xavier Nidecker designed the Project X to be a board that reflects the future of snowboard production. It’s built using a unique variation of ULTRA Construction that features multiple layers of Fusion Tech and Textreme Carbon instead of a traditional topsheet/fiberglass. The edges of the Spoon nose are beveled up for improved float and turn fluidity while the tail edges are beveled up for less catch. The Project X is the lightest and most advanced board in the Jones quiver.

Kaws’ First Retrospective in Asia: Exhibition Design by ArandaLasch

fun exhibit — fantastically designed by the new york and arizona based design firm. kudos! m.

“Kaws likes to work with physical models so we built a 15-foot-long model of the museum to get acquainted with its tremendous scale,” Aranda told Dezeen. “It used to be an aeroplane hangar and its size is quite deceptive in photographs.”

“The design engages the massive hangar space with simple but large architectural elements, a room and a wall, that serve to organise artwork around them.”

Video — Flemish-Dutch Literature Pavilion by The Cloud Collective

simply stunning especially the wall with mapped video — love it! m.

this october, flanders & the netherlands hosted the guest of honour pavilion for the frankfurter buchmesse. the studios CIVIC & MATTERS of the cloud collective were selected to design and execute the focal point of the event: a central literature salon.

the pavilion celebrates authors and literature foremost, but cultural context and cross-over arts are also given a podium. functions in the pavilion exceed the book alone, and are grouped around the concept of ‘the narrative’ in a broader sense. there are theatre and debate spaces, several exhibitions, a graphic studio, virtual reality spaces, a bookshop, café and salon all coming together under the 2,300 meter squared pavilion.

the cloud collective’s design features semi-transparent plastic sheets, simply stacked to create a variety of walls and volumes. a temporary and low cost material, the plastic towers suggest a number of different routes through the space, offering a powerful sensory experience. close inspection or passive observance of the volumes creates a kaleidoscopic effect of light and matter. clever engineering on the part of the cloud collective made sure that once the frankfurter buchmesse has concluded the walls are all completely demountable and reusable.

A Legendary Redesign of Helvetica, Reborn After 30 Years

for us helvetica lovers out there, this is just too cool — look forward to using it in a design. m.

If you have eyeballs, you’ve almost certainly seen Helvetica. It’s one of the most widely used typefaces ever created, so popular that it generated a documentary examining its popularity. It’s almost equally certain that you have not seen Haas Unica, the typeface designed to be Helvetica’s sequel of sorts. Introduced in 1980, it was lost to history almost instantly upon its arrival.

Now, after languishing in obscurity for decades, Unica has been rescued and remastered. Thanks to an effort by Monotype designer Toshi Omagari, the legendary typeface is finally available as Neue Haas Unica, an 18-font family tuned-up for the digital age. Drawn to be legible at small sizes, it could be a perfect Helvetica-substitute for user interfaces and other on-screen text elements. For designers, though, the new Unica is an exciting visitor from the past. As Pentagram partner J. Abbott Miller puts it, “There is a Rip van Winkle quality of a font having woken up after 30 years of sleep.”

Black-White Fixie Bicycle by Eltipo Graphic Design Studio

perfect for the city! m.

eltipo graphic design studio’s ‘black-white fixie’ was originally commissioned by its fellow belgian-compatriot and design studio pinkeye. the relationship between the glossy white and matte black is in perfect harmony from every perspective possible. the supple brown leather seat and handlebars are both engraved with a seamless three-dimensional geometric pattern, subtly revealing their natural light brown undertones.

the eltipographic ‘black-white’ fixie bicycle is a monochromatic masterpiece with a new aesthic, and refines style on two wheels. it features the iconic pairing of glossy white and matte black, plus the dark brown leather seat and handlebars make use of lazer engraving for their minimalist design. while the simplicity of its form gives the impression that it should be made for city cruising, in actuality, it serves as decoration for a pop-up show.

Seeking Beauty: Highlights from Vienna Art Week

some fantastic + thought-provoking works in the mix — kudos! m.

Having just completed its twelfth edition, Vienna Art Week is an annual festival of events that seeks to promote and celebrate contemporary art made and shown in the Austrian capital. Known mainly for its rich musical tradition and imperial Austro-Hungarian architecture, Vienna may not be a regular stop for contemporary art-lovers travelling in Europe, nevertheless, the city has a vibrant art scene, with two Academies hosting around 5,000 art students, over 80 galleries, at least 100 museums and central Europe’s largest auction house, the Dorotheum. This year’s Art Week activated connections and synergies between many of Vienna’s cultural institutions, with a programme of over 200 events, which included discussions, exhibitions, gallery tours, studio visits and many more — all proving just how much there is going on under the radar in a city still mainly associated with Klimt and Otto Wagner.
