Video — Pavilion of Light and Sound by Shigeru Ban

creative design solution by the japanese architect for the venice art biennale 2015 — would love to see it activated. m.

a 16 meters by 9 meters arc stretches from the concrete to the first floor of the building, described by an architectural form that takes the shape of a smooth arc. ‘instead of creating a freestanding pavilion, which can be made anywhere, I am using the existing building wall of this architecture which acts in contrast to my new structure’, shigeru ban tells us.

what looks like a wall of mosaic tiles is actually a carefully engineered grid of makeup palettes arranged to allow light to filter inside the semi-luminous interior throughout the day and night. the tensile structure is made with acrylic sheets that form the exterior of the pavilion, which hang in a natural suspension, creating a parabola.

Quai Ouest by Anne Démians

stunningly crafted stainless fenestration and interiors. m.

located five hundred meters from nancy’s place stanislas (a UNESCO world heritage site), this mixed-use project by anne démians’ french architectural practice features a distinctive stainless steel façade with 640 oblong windows. named ‘quai quest’, the 10,000 square meter building includes numerous offices, a hotel and various retail outlets.

I designed and completed a compact building that would be immediately read and understood’, explains anne démians. ‘its walls are completely covered with stainless steel, studded with oblong bays from which round windows look out like eyes. above, I placed raised eyelids, a sign of alertness. the great perceived density is softened by the lightness of the stainless steel surface, bringing reflections of the changing sky onto the exposed surfaces and to the windows’.

Video — Amsterdam: City Of Integration

awesome to see this — as america is currently/unfortunately doing the opposite — kudos! m.

recent global migration waves have fueled intense debates in amsterdam, the netherlands and beyond. migration is of all ages however, and comes in many varieties — nomadic, circulatory, refugee, settler, temporary, and many more. instead of perceiving it as a problem, design firm FABRICations suggests that being open to various types of migration could also be highly beneficial to both newly arrived migrants as well as amsterdam itself. current policies for integration of asylum seekers in the netherlands mean long waiting times, sometimes up to two years, during which applicants are denied to work and have no access to social urban dynamics. bureaucratic procedures result therefore in many lost opportunities while amsterdam is growing and in need for diverse talents and backgrounds.

Video — Behind Locked Doors by Vasku & Klug

beautiful. minimalist. creative art installation. m.

‘from all sides the slightly sparkling sand seems to lead the way into the room with invisible wave movements in dune-like formations, smoothed on the surface by the years of calm after centuries of hectic activity. richly ornamented chandeliers with the most finely cut crystal, archetypes of imperial splendor, prove themselves to be, apparently for the last time, magicians with light. before they too, having long ago lost their function, finally disappear. still a long time before the building itself.’

Miho Museum Japan by I.M. Pei

classic design from the great i.m. pei. m.

The Miho Museum was a joint Japanese and American project completed by architect I. M. Pei and Kibowkan International, Inc. in August of 1996 on a scenic mountainside in a nature preserve near the town of Shigaraki, Shiga prefecture, Japan.

The museum’s details reflect the designer’s innovative endeavor to break new ground, as with the novel appearance of sloped glass walls composed of space frames, the warmth of the materials used, especially the Magny Doré limestone and colored concrete, and the systems for exhibiting and housing works of art under the optimum conditions.
