AsGummo were only going to be renting the space on the first floor of the oldParool newspaper building in Amsterdam for two years, i29 convinced Gummo toembrace the mantra of reduce, reuse, recycle to create a stylish office spacethat would impact as little as possible on the environment or their wallets.i29 developed a theme that reflects Gummos personality and design philosophy simple, uncomplicated, no-nonsense, yet unquestionably stylish with a twist ofhumour. Everything in the office conforms to the new house style of white andgrey. All the furniture was locally sourced via Marktplaats (the Dutch eBay),charity shops and whatever was left over at the old office. Everything was thenspray painted with polyurea Hotspray to conform with the new colour schemehouse style. Even Jesus wasnt immune, as you can see in the attached pictures. The interior of the office is, just like the building itself, re-used. Theyleft the existing building as it was, and placed one visually strong element inthe 450 m2 open space. The collection of second hand and re-used furniture inone and the same finish is one powerful unified sculpture, so your attentionwill attract to the new interior instead of the old surrounding. Theminimalistic interior has gained even more playful details by using alldifferent types of furniture. To exaggerate the monolith character of thestrangely formed pieces of furniture, grey squares are painted on the concretefloor to frame the different areas in the office space. Reception, workingareas, lounge areas, a mini grandstand and canteen are all unified within theconcept.
a terrific addition to a hospital designed by the late-great jean prouvé — brilliant work by the dutch studio. beautiful + creative video production too. m.
“The new design provides a roof over this space, rather than placing the different programmes — which include medicine, surgery, general medical practice and midwifery — in separate adjacent wings,” the architects said.
“This design merges all student-related programmes into one central square, where students from all of the medical disciplines meet.”
“We embrace those parameters (zoning ordinances) and use them as the DNA of our buildings. If carefully studied, NYC’s zoning allows for many interpretations that follows logical principals.”
the ‘lo res car’ is part of the united nude ‘lo res project’, which was started several years ago and has become an important signature of the brand’s style. the design method is based on the principle of reshaping the same object in a series, each time lowering the 3D resolution, resulting in a more fragmented and abstract contours each step of the way.
the ‘lo res’ car’s shape came from lowering the 3D resolution of the iconic lamborghini ‘countach’ designed by marcello gandini from the early seventies. the vehicle can be described as a conceptual design experiment, rather than a conventional car.
the two-seater with the passenger sitting behind the driver, is situated on a polycarbonate body that surrounds the riders in a transparent capsule for a unique driving experience. the interior of the car is kept minimal with the focus on the some elements that made from polished stainless steel, while the rest of the car was deliberately kept untreated with a matt black coating. the achieve the clean forms, the ‘lo res’ car has no doors, but instead the entire body lifts up using electric actuators.
terrific juxtaposition of raw recycled materials and crisp white steel. m.
‘bench_01′ is an experiment in efficiency by design studio cradle. a collaboration between jessye grundlingh, andrew kroetsch, and nicholas koppelaar, the seating piece is made with the first cut of a tree. often referred to as the ‘misfit’, the piece is often discarded. ‘bench_01′, as a system for design, questions what is waste, and what uses the doomed materials have. minimal work was done to alter the wood, and only a few hours are needed to prepare the steel bench structure.
responding to a client’s deep-seated interest in precision engineering, local firm dethier architectures inserted a technically advanced architectural object into a reinterpreted loft in belgium. the architect stems from the 1970’s movement to transform small and medium-sized industrial sites into housing units. often, however, such renovations were superficial in nature — a passé, rough-hewn treatment for a lifestyle out of synch with contemporary expectations. most observers are aware of this, yet preconceptions about how loft-design are as deep-rooted as their histories. proposing bold aesthetic choices while much more difficult in this context, supplemented a design mainly focused on the space’s layout, function and sensitivity. the program called for the creation of a living space for a couple with no children in an abandoned industrial bakery. the renovation began by opening up the available room as much as possible, removing the tie beams and strengthening the rafters with metal plates set in the ridge beam. the resulting 154 sq. m open area was structured by the introduction of a rounded modular unit housing two bathrooms, storage areas, a toilet and the heating and ventilation systems. the pod divides the interior space and provides for various functions while creating a range of ambiances. beginning with the entrance, the space provides zones for the hall, office, lounge, kitchen, dining room, bedroom and dressing room. the lounge area is located on the southern side of the space, while the bedroom is to the north. clad in aluminum, the architectural object was informed by an airstream trailer’s aerodynamic aesthetic. belgian artist jean gilbert dictated the saturated color scheme which can be glimpsed at through three porthole windows. while the windows can be made opaque, the varied tonal elements energise the predominantly white interior architecture, which serves to indirect light and emphasises the unit’s brushed aluminium skin. clean lines and a simple tonal range produce a feeling of weightlessness– a notion reinforced by the understated, high-tech furnishings. strategically placed floor-to-ceiling windows and lines of sight– one can look down a street and out towards the spacious terrace– were of particular importance. the terrace almost doubles the living space and offers the inhabitants direct contact with the neighbourhood.
minimalism + furniture design + stellar architecture = perfection! m.
furnishing for herzog & de meuron‘s elbphilharmonie in hamburg has been completed with a comprehensive concept and own designs by daniel schöning from WRS ARCHITEKTEN & STADTPLANER, and eva marguerre and marcel besau from hamburg-based design office studio besau-marguerre. the interdisciplinary team realized both the concept and a range of furniture pieces specifically for the project. the project included the foyers of the grand and small concert halls, the three lounges, the conductor’s and soloist’s suites, as well as the rehearsal rooms.
the high-end interior concept responds to the building’s design with a thoughtful sensitivity, aiming to leave a lasting impression without imparting the impact of the architecture. the theme — which extends over the entire concert hall — takes up the architects’ herzog & de meuron focus on materiality to create an aesthetic and imaginative resonance for the visitors of the elbphiharmonie that goes beyond the musical experience. the result is a curated selection of materials whose spectrum of perception varies from warm to cold and from soft to rough. equalized by a uniform color scheme, the pieces of furniture give the impression of visually forming one single object.
